How do you know you’re buying a quality CBD (Cannabidiol) product for your pet?
What can you look for that will help you know that what you’re giving your dog or cat is the best product for them?
Today, we’ll be looking into these questions. There are several ways to know the CBD supplement or treat you’re giving to your pet is a quality product.
First, let’s define what the Cannabis plant is…
The 2 species of the Cannabis plant are Hemp (species 1) and Marijuana (species 2).
Marijuana (species 2) contains THC, which is the component of the cannabis plant that is considered ‘psychoactive’ and provides the ‘high’ when consumed. This part of the Cannabis plant is usually used for human-grade supplements, gummies, edibles, and medicinal purposes. It should never be used to make pet supplements of any kind.
Hemp (species 1) is what CBD supplements for pets are made from because it is CBD forward, has very little THC (0.3% or less), and is now federally legal.
Since THC is toxic to our pets, it’s important to know the CBD supplement has been certified to have 0.3% or less of THC in each dose given. Ideally, the amount of THC in any CBD pet supplement should be 0.0%.
You may have noticed that companies that manufacture CBD products for pets use the terms ‘CBD’ and ‘Hemp’ interchangeably… that’s because the CBD they are using comes from the Hemp plant.
How do we know the dosage of CBD in the supplements or treats we give our pets is accurate?
There are 2 good ways to know if the CBD you are buying for your pet is a quality product.
First, look for the Certificate of Analysis (COA) seal. Any CBD pet product bearing the COA seal on the label has been verified by a 3rd party lab. The information verified is that the CBD product is manufactured the same way each time and that the outcome for each dosage is accurate. The test results can be found on each manufacturer’s website.
The second good way to know if you are buying a quality CBD product for your pet is to look for the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) seal on the product. The NASC was founded in 2002 for the purpose of setting and keeping high-quality standards in place for supplements used for animal purposes only… mainly dogs, cats, and horses.
The NASC is a non-profit, industry trade association that buys animal supplement products directly from the marketplace and tests them for label accuracy. In other words, whatever claims a pet supplement company makes on their label, the NASC makes sure those claims are factual and correct.
